Any Website Design is Free?
Not quite. My goal is to help small businesses who need simple but effective websites and who are stuck choosing between the frustration of making websites themselves or paying a professional who will charge them too much relative to what they need. I’ve been doing this for going on a decade, I’ve gotten pretty efficient at it, and my rule of thumb is that I’ll put together a website for free if I can do the bulk of the work in an afternoon. What that usually amounts to is a website consisting of a few pages, text, media (images, video, and/or audio), and contact forms.
I’m more than happy to take on larger projects that involve more complicated website features and/or more labor-intensive design services, but pricing that is a whole different story. If you’d like a quote for a more complicated project, feel free to fill out the form here.
What’s the catch?
Free website design probably sounds too good too be true, but I really mean it. I will set up an effective website for your small business for free.
The only cost for your website, and my only way of profitting from it, will be the $35 monthly fee that covers hosting, maintenance, licenses for the necessary softwares, and insurance that I will fix your site if something breaks on it.
All of my websites are built on WordPress, and I am always happy to add you as an admin on your site so that you can see exactly what plugins are running on your site.
Will the Website Ever Cost Anything?
I’ll make the website for free, but websites need to be hosted, maintained, and monitored. I charge $35 per month to do that and, in the name of transparency, that’s how I profit from making your website for free.
Why that amount? $35 per month is about what you would pay for a good managed hosting service alone. My goal is to offer far more value by offering managed hosting while also including the range of other services and softwares that would cost hundreds of dollars more per year if you paid for them yourself. That $35 per month gains you access to my unlimited licenses from WPMU Dev’s suite of premium plugins, premium website tools from Elegant Themes, and other premium plugins.
After doing this for so long, I basically have an economy of scale that allows me to pay a lot less for the licenses and services that I need per website because I manage a bunch of them. Websites get cheaper as you create more of them, and it’s much more efficient to get in on my economy of scale by hosting through Kyle Huitt Web Design than to pay for everything yourself a la carte.
Whose Website Is It?
Yours! Some web design companies will make you pay to own your website’s files, but that’s not how I like to do things. It’s important to me that your website is your property, and you are always at liberty to migrate it elsewhere at no charge. Of course, I do everything in my power to make sure you’re getting more value by hosting your website with Kyle Huitt Web Design than by taking it somewhere else.
If you do choose to take your website somewhere else, the drawback will be that you’ll lose access to my software licenses, and so you’ll have to supply them yourself.
